Pharoahe Monch
Pharoahe
Monch struck me as quite the character. The day after my interview I spent the day with his crew, seeing them setup for the show, listening to sound checks and politicking with people they hadn't seen in a while. Pharoahe would be bouncy one moment, and then introverted the next, that stereotype that comes to mind about artists applies here...without the melodramatics and bullshit. My favorite and most lasting memories of him will probably be him right after his performance, eating while everyone was talking around him...completely unaware of what's going on, and him joking with everyone about our interview on the bus back to the hotel, questioning what I was looking for when I asked the last thing he bought of value.
It's a known fact that I want to give Ghostface a healthy baby, or at least work on making one, and that I think Nas should perform "Nas is Like" at every show he does, or even that I think Talib is the black man all black men should be, but meeting Pharoahe was the most exciting part of that experience, mostly because there were no preconceived ideas of who he was, beyond knowing his music.
Hopefully it won't be the last time I see him.
BTW: That line, "Ladies rub on ya titties", is right up there with Ghostface's "You Goddamn right I fuck fans" in my list of filthy fucking sayings I pull out when the time is right. Go to Brooklyn and ask about me, seriously, that's my shit every time I visit... NYC has the most beautiful women in America.
Bettie: Give me five words to describe you, your essence?
Pharoahe Monch: "(Laughs) Crazy, passionate, thinker, secretive, passionate"
Bettie: What, Like, Passionate squared?
Pharoahe Monch: "Yeah, that's it. (Laughs)"
B: What was the last thing of value you bought?
PM: "My Iphone"
B: Are You Serious?
PM: "Yeah, (Laughs) What?"
B: I just didn't expect that, Why?
PM: "I just put all of my music on there, and was so inspired by it, even today. I just feel happy about having my music on the treadmill again"
B: Okay, Pharoahe Monch loves his Iphone.
PM: "Yeah, that's it"
B: So, since we have to wrap this up, What sort of answer can you give to people who say Hip Hop is dead?
PM: "It's layered, I mean, it's not a black and white issue, culturally it is in a coma, but the art of hip hop is definitely not dead, I think people are still passionate about the way they go about their hip hop and stay true to it."
B: Tell me about the making of Desire...
PM: "What can I say (Laughs), What can't be said? For me this was basically about Growing, just desire...No pun intended"
B: And since I know artists like the idea of having their words end the interview, instead of me paraphrasing something or coming up with something witty, you do the work for me and answer this last question, How would you like to close this interview, anything obscenely prolific or prophetic to say?
PM: "Basically I feel like for me, it's half time, I just feel good about my future in music because I feel it's, well, I'm so enthusiastic about the direction this album is going, I'm happy."

Now, Let's play a little game called "Did You Know?":
Did you know : that Fashion Rocks in coming up? It'll be airing on the 7th, check your listings and shit.
Did you know: the sample from "Drive Slow", Hank Crawford’s "Wildflower" is one of my favorite tracks and has been since I was a shorty? Same for the theme song to “Peter Gunn”, especially if sung by Dinah Washington.
Did you know: how short Nas is? I was looking down at him at Rock The Bells, my mum says it's because I'm obscenely tall for a woman. She's always so encouraging, really.
Did you know: the Party boys, minus Sober, are going to be fucking up the game on Saturday night? Well, if you didn't then peep this flier and be in the place around 11.

I'll be there then, hopefully still fully clothed, hopefully still decent. But, I’m sure no one would mind, nobody told me to get off that speaker the last time...shit, it is what it is.

Lately
I've been obsessed with the idea of a wardrobe full of couture clothing. Now, if you read this blog at all you will know I actually hate "Couture", it's obscene, gaudy, and, in my eyes, trashy. I do not like art for art's sake...I believe in function. Having said that you should know that the real meaning, literally, is "High Fashion" Or "Custom Fitted Clothing". That's what I want. Stuff that I got made for me!
I've been researching vintage patterns, and dressmakers in Dallas. Seeing how much things would cost, and when it'd be a good idea to try someone out. Check out some of my inspiration:

And the wardrobe neccesity for every bad bitch: The JumpSuit

At any rate, my people got things going down, so if you want to bring your dates, or your very attractive single male friends (preferably between 25 and 45 years of age) then feel free, most of them are Gratis anyway.

Grammy Award Viewing PartySunday February 11th

New York, Phily, D.C., Chicago and Dallas are all hosting their own Grammy party at the Hard Rock Cafe. Our's goes down next Sunday with performances by Strange Fruit Project, PPT and Red Monroe.

And speaking of Kelis...Her and hubby Nas are shooting a reality show similar to Nick and Jessica's Newley Weds series. Now from what I've seen, all couples that have chosen to go this route have ended up in divorce (Nick and Jes, David Navarro and Carmen Electra, Travis Barker and his chick). I'm hoping for the best though.

"It's My Block Now Aight Kid?"Now that we've been doing this for a minute, and have been getting feedback about entries and people showing love, I think it's appropriate for me to say that we really appreciate it. We do this for Dallas, ummm, and the free champagne I get at parties now...Definitely.

Lot's of things about to happen, first up:

This is going to be ill, I'll be in the building for a bit to peep out the scenery but will be dipping out to go another event, oh the life of a social butterfly! Keep in mind that you need to RSVP, because there WILL BE A LIST, so click the flyer to hit up the
P.E.G. Myspace.
________________________________________________________________
Next!

This is the event I will be leaving P.E.G. to go to. The Jumpoff has proven to be a party for the grown and sexy folks in Dallas, and the performers:
Steve Austin and
Pikhasso have always delivered when it comes to a good show. This is a monthly event, so if you can't make this one don't fret, it only get's better.
_________________________________________________________________
Last But Not Least:
THE BROAD OF THE WEEK!!!
Carmen Ejogo Wright
This is the first time I actually feel a little bad calling a woman a broad, but she's fierce as fuck...no lie. She was born in London, is a classically trained actress, plus she's married to jeffrey Wright, one of my favorite actors. He's the guy who played Basquiat in "Basquiat". Let's just say she's an all around stunner.

Killa ThreadsYou're probably looking at this thinking, dude, isn't Cuba supposed to handle streetwear? Yes Ma! She is, but, she's got some stuff goin' on, stuff I think is way more important than this blog, so I don't plan on bothering her about it until she's straight. She's still fam though, so don't sleep, Ms. Cuba will be back to give us the goods real soon.
On to the business....
ClawMoney is some shit I stumbled onto yesterday, it's fly as hell, plus it's got the Chanel chain print my girl has been feeling lately, if you peeped her wishlist you'd know all about it. Here's some flicks for the fans:
Fierce huh? If you're into the sweatsuit set thing this is the shit to have, especially since
you'll never see this shit in Dallas, real talk. It'll be super fresh to catch a broad in this, plus it'll let me know you've been reading....Let Bee Upgrade You!
Moving Along.
This weekend was fierce, The Party went off without a hitch, The boy's did their thing even with a less than wild crowd. This cold weather is thinning out crowds everywhere, why aren't people rocking house parties right now? That's what needs to go down, real talk.
The Next Night was "Low Tech High Life" at Art Prostitute. It went off without a hitch. There's something about people who get some shine being sweet to their fans. Jeremy Fish even signed a record for Select. Dope. The usual suspects were in the place...all fam. I gotta say, I love seeing people out supporting each other. I'm such a fucking softy.
This weekend was fly. Gay men in hats, Bars, Lovely. And it continues this weekend.
Get it going people....Your girl will be MCing at Art Prostitute on Friday. You get to hear Ms. Flo$$y on the mic all night.
Come Out!
BTW. I'll be getting better about updating, since it's just me for the time being, I'll be updating everyday.
